The Atebubu Divisional Police Command has mounted a manhunt for a group of suspected armed robbers who attacked some passengers in the early hours of yesterday on the Atebubu-Kumasi highway.
The incident happened around 5:15 am at Akokoa teak forest, a thicket in between Amantin and Akokoa township.
One person, Yaw Antwi who according to sources is an officer with the Nsawam prisons was shot and killed by the robbers whilst another officer, Paul Gyan who was seriously injured in attack is currently on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The robbers made away with prison uniforms, pistol, mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money.
According to one of the passengers, the robbers mounted a road block in between Akokoa and Amantin before carrying out their nefarious activity.
“We got to the point and we saw a road block. They shot indiscriminately at one of the vehicles killing one person instantly. They later robbed us of our phones and monies before bolting into the bush.”
Meanwhile, banewsgh.com is reliably informed that commuters who ply the Atebubu-Kumasi road are leaving in fear and have called on the police to strengthen security on the road as the robberies in the area are becoming alarming.
