Workers from the formal sector in the Brong-Ahafo Region on Sunday joined their colleagues to celebrate May Day at the Jubilee Park in the Sunyani Municipality.
The celebration brought together all Labour Unions in Region. Prominent among them were JUSAG, GPRTU, GAWU, TEWU, PUWU, HSWU, MWU etc.
It was attended by the Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Eric Opoku, the Sunyani west MCE, Mr Kwesi Oppong Ababio and the Sunyani East DCE, Madam Agnes Kusi and some Traditional Authorities and was under the theme ‘ the role of workers in securing peaceful election towards national development’.
The Workers were holding placards some of them read, Let’s jaw- jaw not war, Ghana was there before political parties, Let’s peace prevail for National development, only the privileged few can afford tertiary education, politicians should not toy with our education, Mr Mahama why teachers?, pay your water bill promptly among others.
Addressing the workers during the cerebration, the Regional minister, Mr Eric Opoku commended them for their contributions towards the development of the nation and also building a strong economy.
Touching on the theme for the celebration, Mr Eric Opoku said, the role of workers in ensuring a peaceful and violence free elections on 7th November could not be over emphasised.
He therefore advised them to play their part by taking part in public sensitisation to educate the general public on the importance of peace and also to conduct themselves well to ensure an incident free polls come November 7.
The Regional Minister also urged workers whose names were not in the voters register to take advantage of the ongoing limited registration exercise to register to enable them exercise their franchise in the 2016 elections.
