Residents of Agogo in the Ashanti Akyim North District in the Ashanti region are demonstrating against what they describe as unfair treatment at the hands of nomadic herdsmen.
The demonstrating residents are angry because according them, the herdsmen had up to the end of March, 2016 to leave the area but the order has not been enforced. They expressed their disappointment in the security agencies for failing to eject the nomadic herdsmen per the road map agreed on.
They further accused soldiers deployed to the area to restore calm and drive the herdsmen away as doing virtually nothing in relation to the menace.
“They [soldiers] are doing practically nothing here. They were here when two men were shot in their farms, what did they do, they couldn’t arrest…more than six people have been shot but they haven’t arrested…so we want the whole world to know that Agogo is not independent as Ghana is independent.”
Residents of Agogo have been battling with the atrocities of nomadic herdsmen for some time now, a situation that motivated the youth of the town to ban all political activities and national celebrations.
