A policeman with the Peki District Police Station was almost killed by highway robbers at early hours of Tuesday when he was shot at a spot between Tsibu and Agbate in the South Dayi District in the Volta Region.
Corporal Emmanuel Kwabena Awuah is said to be in critical condition at the Volta Regional Hospital after he was shot in the knee and a cartridge hit his penis, causing him to bleed profusely.
Thereports that, the attackers also assaulted and robbed a driver and two of his mates of two mobile phones and GH¢900 after impounding their trailer and using it to block the road between Tsibu and Agbate.
Explaining the incident, the Peki District Police Commander, DSP Jonas Agbevam said, Corporal Awuah was returning from anti-armed robbery duties at the Todome Checkpoint around 3 a.m. when the incident occurred.
The policeman on reaching the area thought the vehicle had been involved in an accident and, therefore, went to find out what had happened. But before he could reach the spot, one of the robbers shot him in the knee prompting him to fire back, DSP Agbevam said.
Corporal Awuah was then rushed to the Peki Hospital when his armed colleagues rushed to the scene and found him bleeding profusely. He was later referred to the Volta Regional Hospital where he is now receiving treatment.
No arrests were made as the robbers were able to escaped. The police in Ho have commenced investigations into the incident.
