The Sunyani Municipal Assembly has commissioned an ultra modern two storey building office complex it constructed for the Municipal Health Directorate under the Local Government Capacity Support Project to enhance the provision of health care.
The commission ceremony which was held at the premises of the Municipal hospital was attended by the First Lady, Dr. Lordina Mahama, the Regional Minister, Mr Eric Opoku and his deputies, government officials, Traditional Leaders, the Media and some staff of the hospital.
In his welcome address, the MCE, Mr Kwesi Oppong Ababio said the construction of the edifice was in fulfillment of a pledge he made to the First Lady in 2013 during one of her visits to the Municipality to create awareness on breast and cervical cancer to provide the Sunyani Municipal Health Directorate with a befitting office and also tar the entire premises of the Sunyani Municipal Hospital.
According to him the construction and the commissioning of the the ultra modern office accommodation was in fulfillment of the pledge and also reaffirms the Assembly and government’s comitment to ensure the effective delivery of health care to the citizenry through the provision of the needed health infrastructure.
Mr Oppong Ababio stated that, the edifice would go a long way to provide a conducive environment for the health Directorate to enable them supervise and monitor effectively all the facilities in the Municipality to ensure that, an acceptable health care delivery and protocols are adhered to.
The MCE revealed that, the Assembly has executed many projects in the communities in the Municipality in order to make healthcare delivery accessible to the people in the Sunyani Municipality.
He mentioned the completion of health centres at Nwawasua, Atronie, Nkrankrom, construction of a Clinic at Yawhimakrom, sickbay at St. James Seminary, CHPS Zones at Benu Nkwanta and Atuahenekrom and the construction of a two unit semi detached nurses’ quarters at Yawhimakrom as well as the provision of a one unit lecture hall with sanitation facilities for the Midwifery Department at the Sunyani Nursing Training School as some of the projects the Assembly has underken.
Mr. Oppong Ababio said the Health Directorate needs alot of logistics and funds to enable it exercise its functions effectively which the Assembly alone could not bear the cost
He therefore made a passionate appeal to the the Mrs Lordina Mahama to use her influence to get the Directorate a vehicle to facilitate its operation for the benefit of the people.
However, commissioning the office complex, Mrs Lordina Mahama commended the management and staff of the hospital for their hard work and dedication to healthcare delivery
She stressed the need for health professional to be motivated to contribute their part in helping government to fulfil its obligation of protecting the health of citizens.
The First lady used the occasion to donate hospital beds and some medical equipment to the Sunyani Municipal hospital as part of her foundation’s objective of complementing the effort of government to save lives.
