The Ghana Football Association has terminated the contract of Black Stars head coach, Avram Grant. The decision comes less than a week after Stars placed fourth in the just ended AFCON held in Gabon.

According to an official release put out by the FA, both parties mutually agreed to terminate the two-year contract which was supposed to have ended at the end of this month.

“The Ghana Football Association and Black Stars Head coach Abraham Grant have agreed that the two parties will mutually part ways after their contract ends on February 28.

“Mr. Abraham Grant started work on December 1, 2014 as head coach of the senior national team with his contract set to finish at the end of February 2017, after the just ended Africa Cup of Nations finals.”

Even though no reason has been adduced for the termination of the contract, it is believed that his failure to help the Black Stars annexe the nations cup might have triggered that decision.

The coach on his part has saluted the FA and the entire support base of the Black Stars for their support throughout his tenure as coach but he alludes it’s time to seek a new challenge.

Though he revealed that he is leaving behind a very formidable team, the former Ghanaian trainer regrets his ability to win any silverware with the Black Stars during his stay.that the time has come to seek a new challenge.

“After an extremely amicable meeting with the president of Ghana FA, and following more than two successful years in charge of the national team, I’ve informed Mr Nyantakyi that time is right for me to move on to a new challenge and I thank him for the opportunity.

“I’ve hugely enjoyed my time in Ghana taking over after the disastrous 2014 World Cup campaign and rebuilding the squad to reach the final in the African Cup of Nations for only the second time in 23 years, and also the semi final of this year’s competition.

“I’m proud of the fact that I’m leaving an extremely professional, strong squad of players of a good age, who I’m sure will go on to achieve great success in the future.

“The passion and loyalty of the supporters is something I’ll always remember.”

Mr. Avram Grant was appointed as head coach of the senior national team on December 1, 2014, on a two-year contract. With a winning rate of  48%, the Black Stars under his stewardship played 29 matches, with 14 wins, 8 draws and 7 loses.

He led the team to the 2015 and 2017 AFCON competitions placing second and fourth respectively.
