Arizona Senator John McCain has responded to Donald Trump’s attack on his military record, when he said over the weekend that McCain was “a war hero because he was captured”.
Speaking on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ on Monday, McCain, a former prisoner of war, said he doesn’t think the Republican presidential hopeful owed him an apology but rather thinks that Trump “may owe an apology to the families of those who have sacrificed in conflict and those who have undergone the prison experience in serving their country……For me to look back in anger at anyone is nonproductive.”
The billionaire businessman’s remarks about McCain immediately prompted condemnation from several Republican Party candidates and the party.
The two have been trading insults over the last couple of weeks, with McCain accusing the reality tv star of having “fired up the crazies” with his attacks on Mexican immigrants when he held a rally in Phoenix earlier this month.
Senator McCain was held for five-and-a-half years after his plane was shot down in the Vietnam war. Mr Trump avoided service through student and medical deferments.
