Anti-graft campaigner, Mr Martin Amidu has described President John Dramani Mahama as a disgrace to northerners.
He stated that, the corrupt conduct of the President would make it extremely difficult for another northerner to become president in the next 20-30 years as the confidence Ghanaians have in northerners continues to dwindle.
Mr Amidu was speaking on Joy FM’s News Analysis Programme, News File on Saturday.
According to the former Attorney-General, northerners have gained reputation for their honesty and truthfulness, but the corrupt conduct of the president is damaging the northern brand.
“As a young northerner to ascend to the position of president, you must discharge your duty with an utmost integrity,” he said.
He accused the president of presiding over an administration which has institutionalised and glorified corruption. He pointed out that, the President’s lack of commitment to fight corruption should be a source of worry to all northerners since he is making gloomy, the chances of northerners to ascend to the highest office of president.
Meanwhile, a member of the NDC legal team, Mr Abraham Amaliba has denounced Mr Amidu’s pronouncements, saying, the president has not misconducted himself in anyway to disgrace northerners.
He described the comment by the anti-corruption crusader as demeaning to northerners and called on them to rise up and condemn the unfortunate statement.
According to Mr Amaliba, the presidency is not the birth right of any ethnic group and Mr Amidu should not create the impression that sortherners play second fiddle to southerners.
