NewmontThere is heavy security presence at the Ahafo Mines of Newmont Gold Ghana Limited as the over four hundred workers at the Processing Department are agitating over service conditions.

They have given management up to Wednesday afternoon to withdraw the security officers or face their wrath.

Starr FM reports that the National Labour Commission has invited the workers and their employers for a meeting in Accra.

Spokesperson for the agitating workers Victor Gyapong said the management of the mining firm is trying to intimidate them with the security officials.

“We have no idea why they were brought in and almost all of them are reluctant to explain exactly why they were brought there.

“Some say they were brought in to restore calm but we don’t know what they are here to do.

“I think the main idea is just to intimidate us with their uniforms and guns. All of them are holding riffles and are heavily armed.

“It’s surprising that management will resort to this when we haven’t declared a strike or anything like that,” he stated.
