A South African boxer Mzwanele Kompolo has died after being knocked out and collapsing in the ring even before the end of first round, South Africa’s sports ministry has said.
The amatuer boxer died on Tuesday in a hospital in the Eastern Cape town of Frere where he had been on admission having gone into coma after he was rushed there.
Kompolo, lost by Technical Knockout (TKO) in the first round against Siphenathi Qampi. His age was not immediately disclosed by the sports ministry.
Last year, female boxer Phindile Mwelase died in similar fashion after being in a coma for two weeks following a fight in the capital, Pretoria. Investigations are yet to be concluded by the sports ministry.
