Fish Mongers in Yeji in the Brong Ahafo region have threatened to sue the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng over claims that they use formalin to preserve koobi.
According to the traders, they use salt to preserve the koobi and so the Minister should retract the unfounded allegation immediately since it is affecting their business which is their only source of livelihood.
Speaking on behalf of the traders, the President of the Fish Mongers Association in the Brong Ahafo region, Mrs Juliana Gidisu said sales have gone down drastically ever since the Minister made the statement.
Mrs Gidisu revealed that the Koobi business is an old business for the people of Yeji so they will not do anything to destroy the business.
She added that the association will not sit aloof whilst their business collapse so they plan to resort to the law court to seek redress if the Minister fails to withdraw the statement in order to erase the fear in the consumption of koobi which has been a household delicacy for decades.
“The people of Yeji have been doing Koobi business for ages. We use salt in our line business and so we are surprised any individual can just fabricate something of that sort just to destroy our business. We are charging him to retract the statement immediately or meet us in court.”
Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng during a working visit to the Food Research Institute (FRI) and the Industrial Research Institute (IRR) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) last month revealed that some traders preserve koobi with formalin, a dreadful, poisonous and cancer-causing substance used to preserve dead bodies.
“Hitherto, opening the gills of Koobi exposed the salt placed there. Koobi was a little softer and when you put it somewhere flies will be attracted to it. These days you put koobi there and even flies will not go there”.
“So we want the few people who are destroying that industry to stop. Don’t preserve koobi with formalin, it is dangerous, it can cause cancer and it is dangerous everywhere.
“Tell the traders to stop using formalin but instead use salt to preserve koobi.”
